Owls Can’t Quite Rally Enough at Anna Maria

HOLDEN, MA

The UMPI Softball team took the field for the third straight day in Massachusetts, fresh off a 7-3 victory over Lesley less than 24 hours prior. The Owls and Amcats were slated for a doubleheader, but mother nature only allowed teams to get in one game. An early Amcat lead proved to be the difference as Anna Maria went on to win in seven innings.

How it Happened:

After an uneventful and scoreless inning and a half, the Amcats jumped on the Owls in the bottom of the 2nd, hanging a four-spot on the board. Things settled down very quickly after that, as two more scoreless innings brought the game into the 5th. There, the Owls did their damage and threatened to get back in it.

Caileyann Cotta got things started, reaching on an error, and Zoe Stewart reached after here the exact same way. A groundout moved the runners up, and a wild pitch brought in Cotta. Gracelyn Walsh was able to get a ball in the air for a sac-fly to bring in Stewart before the next batter was retired. The Owls scored twice without a hit, cutting the Anna Maria lead in half.

In the bottom of the 5th, the Amcats got one back on an RBI double, then another extra base hit on an RBI triple in the 6th brought them right back where they were. UMPI was unable to muster anything in the top of the 7th as Anna Maria closed out the game with a score of 6-2.

At the Plate:

UMPI's bats were relatively quiet compared to their nine hits the day before. Megan Bucholz paced the Owls, going 2-2, while Gracelyn Walsh went 1-2 with the game's only RBI. Emma McNally went 1-3, rounding out the base hits for the Owls.

In the Circle:

Megan Bucholz took the ball for the second straight game and went the whole way again. She tossed six innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. She also struck out a career single-game high of six batters.

Next Up:

The Owls will move on to play the University of Maine at Farmington this Friday and Saturday. The first day will be a conference doubleheader, while the second day will be non-conference.
