UMPI Volleyball continues to trend in the right direction as they won their second straight conference game with an 11am sweep of VTSU-Lyndon.
How it Happened:
UMPI put together their best set of the entire season when they seemingly couldn't lose a point in the first set. UMPI jumped ahead 7-2 and then rattled off a nine-point run to take a 17-2 lead. They led 21-3 at one point also before Lyndon put together a five point run, showcasing a little fight, but UMPI closed it out from there winning 25-9.
The Owls picked up right where they left off starting out 6-1. That early lead turned into a late lead as UMPI kept up the pace to go up 20-6. Another insurmountable lead, the Owls closed it out despite Lyndon pushing back at the end to win 25-10.
The third set began differently than the first two as the Hornets started out hot, leading 3-0. The Hornets played their best ball of the day to go up 9-4 and make it seem to everyone they had the advantage in this set. The Owls then went on their biggest run of the day, scoring 12 times in a row to go up 16-9. They put it in cruise control from there, and won 25-14.
Top Performers:
Bailey Rosentreter led in kills with five while Evelyn Elijah and Nyla Guiboche had four. Angel Gutierrez showed out on her senior day, putting together four aces as she was a part of some big UMPI runs. Mia Gutierrez also had four aces. Brooke Gardner paced the offense again with 11 assists, while Maubi Mateo had 10 digs.
Three senior Owls play their last regular season home game as Angel Gutierrez, Hailey Saylor and Brianna Bolhuis were honored pregame. UMPI hopes to earn a top four seed for a chance to host a NAC postseason game in early November.
Next Up:
UMPI improves to 4-7 overall and get back to .500 at 2-2 in conference. The Owls will head to New York next weekend to take on SUNY Cobleskill in a doubleheader with the first game being a NAC matchup.
