PRESQUE ISLE, ME: After the Univiersity of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Soccer season opener last Sunday, the major theme was the success of UMPI's younger players. That theme carried on into today as the Owls stopped a determined, and shorthanded Fisher squad 1-0 in their home opener. The Owls scored the first goal in the 23
rd minute of the first half. From there the game entered standoff mode. UMPI fired many shots (17 to Fisher's 3) but were unable to convert many.
Alexis Ireland paced the way with six shots, 2 on target, while
Taylor Marston also had two on target.
The deciding factor in the game came in the 23
rd minute of the first half. Freshman
Kayla MacLean found freshman
Madelynn Morrow to the left side, well outside the 18-yard box. Morrow made a great move to get around her defender and launched a shot over the keeper that found the back of the net. It was déjà vu from her first goal last Sunday down in Augusta, and the two first-year's combined to make the difference in the 1-0 game.
The Owls now have won 3 straight games if you go back to last year's finale and improve to 2-0 on the year. They will host Maine Maritime Academy next Saturday afternoon at 3:30.
