Owls Fall Short to Eagles

BANGOR, MAINE – The Owls softball team took on North Atlantic Conference opponent Husson University as the two undefeated NAC teams battled. The Eagles of Husson were able to take the first game in the extra innings, 3-2. Also taking the win in the non-conference game 2, 6-4.

Game 1: 2-3 Eagles

Game one was a battle on the mound with first year Hailey Saylor and 2022 pitcher of the year McKenna Smith. Saylor was able to hold the Eagles to just one earned run in the game and a total eight hits, causing them to fly out 14 times and ground out seven batters. Smith was able to strike out 15 batters and hold the Owls to four hits and one earned run.

A SAC fly by Olivia Gray brought Saylor home in the first inning to give the Owls an early 1-0 lead. From then on it was a battle on the mound as the teams combined for just ten batters reaching the bases throughout the next four innings. In the fifth the Eagles were able to bring in a run to tie the game off two UMPI errors and one hit.

As the game went into the eighth inning, with a runner starting on second. The Owls were able to bring in a run to take the 2-1 lead. It was yet again Saylor bringing the run in off an RBI double. Although the Eagles would bring in two runs in the bottom of the eighth to give them the walk off win.

Game 2: 4-6 Eagles

The Owls started it off with a run in the first yet again, as Zoe Stewart hit an RBI single to bring Dalaney Anfinson home. This time the Eagles answered right back with a run in the first to tie it. An RBI double and single brought in two more runs for the Eagles in the third to take the lead. Then adding three more in the fifth gave the Eagles a 6-1 lead. Although the Owls woke up late in the game, scoring two runs in the sixth off a Emma McNally ground out and an Eagles error. Going into the seventh inning the Owls continued to battle back, scoring another run off a Stewart RBI single. Although the single runs was not enough as the Eagles completed the sweep.

The Owls will continue their NAC play as they face off against Thomas College and UMF in back to back doubleheaders this weekend.
