Owls Earn First Win of the Year

UMPI Returns from Mass. 1-0-1 to Start the Season

Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, MA – The Owls earn first win of the year, after beating Massachusetts Maritime Academy 2-0. This advances the Owls record to 1-0-1 as they head back to Presque Isle after their season opening road trip in Mass.

The Owls came out of the gate red hot with a shot in the first 30 seconds followed by a Zhoreen Malik goal in just the first minute of the game. The goal was assisted by Sierra Bryant and Alexis Ireland, giving Malik her second goal of the year, in just two games. UMPI ekept applying pressure in the first half with eight shots, all of which were on goal compared to the Buccaneers four shots, one on goal. In the second half the Owls continued to pressure the Bucs, with a couple more shots on goal early in the second. It was Alexis Ireland who would score the Owls second goal of the day in the 69th minute of the game, assisted by Taylor Shute. Down by two goals, the Bucs went on the attack, with six shots in the second half. The Owls defense would hold up strong as they were able to complete the shut out.

Savannah Rodriguez earned her first win of the year in goal, finishing the shut out game with four saves. Brady Deschamps was in goal for the Bus, finishing with seven saves. Ireland led the Owls the whole game on the attack with five shots, all of which were on goal, and finishing with one of the Owls goals. Along with Malik's goal, Hope Shea was on the attack alongside them with three of her four shots being on goal.

The Owls will head back to Presque Isle as they start their North Atlantic Conference play on the weekend, hosting Maine Maritime Academy followed by non-conference opponent Fisher College.
