Owls Split Badgers to Earn First NAC Win

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The UMPI Owls women's volleyball team hosted their first North Atlantic Conference opponent Northern Vermont University – Johnson in a doubleheader match up. The Owls would split the Badgers in the two matches, give the Owls their first win of the year. UMPI now sits, 1-14 on the year and 1-2 in the NAC and the Badgers now sit 7-8 on the year and 1-2 in the NAC.
 
Match 1
Owls vs Badgers – 24-26, 23-25, 14-25
The teams near even throughout the first set, with the Badgers 16 kills to the Owls 11 to total the first set. The Owls held the lead early in the set, leading 15-9 and later 18-12. The Badgers did not give up as they rallied back in the first set of the day. With UMPI up late, 22-17 the Badgers went on a 7-0 run to give them a 2-point lead, the Owls answered with a 2-point run to tie the game. Then the Badgers followed with a couple kills to end the first set in extra play.
The second set, the teams played more even throughout the match, as they were tied 13 times in the second set. Including the final points of the game, as the teams were tied 23 each. The Badgers yet again finished it off late with two kills to put the second set away. The third set the Badgers put the Owls away early to finish the sweep.
Four Owls players finished with five kills each, Makayla Miskiewicz, Alexis Engel, Rachel Walker, and Tallia Robledo. Amalia Erives led the team with 17 assists on the game while Engel finished with 13 digs and Libero Kylee Blazick finished with 11 digs
 
Match 2
Owls vs Badgers – 27-25, 26-25, 27-25
In the Owls first win of the year, they had to battle with the Badgers in extra play for each set. The Badgers early runs gave them a lead, until the Owls followed to take the lead back, 13-11. The Badgers then went back on a run to give them a 20-16 lead late. This time the Owls answered with a five point run themselves to take back the lead. The teams then exchanged points back and forth through the remainder of the first set, until the Owls were able to force some Badger errors, and eventually take the win.
The momentum followed over to the second set for UMPI as they continued to push their lead throughout the game, finding themselves up 11-6, 14-10 and later 18-14. The Badgers would not go away though, as they battled back late to eventually take the lead, 20-19. Some more back and forth play late, this time ended with two kills by the Owls, Alondra Lopez and Hailey Kelly finished the second set to earn them the win. With the Owls one win away of a sweep and their first win of the year, they came out of the gate battling the tough Badgers team, eventually tying the game at 12 each. Back to back kills by Lopez and an error by the Badgers gave the Owls a lead later in the set, 18-17. The teams back and forth continued before the Badgers took at 24-22 lead. A couple more kills for UMPI, this time by Rachel Walker and a couple by Makayla Misckiewicz led the Owls 5-1 run late to complete the sweep.
 
The Owls will continue their home weekend as the host NAC opponent NVU-Lyndon for another doubleheader.
