Owls Split Day 1 with the Terriers

Presque Isle, ME – The UMPI Owls Softball team hosted the Terriers of Thomas at their home field. The teams split the games, 1-1 in the first round of the doubleheaders. This moving the Owls to 13-5 in the North Atlantic Conference and the Terriers 8-6. Game one went to the Owls in a 6-3 win while the Terriers took game 2, 5-4.

Game 1

6-3, UMPI

Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA) earned the start in game one for UMPI, before leaving in the third inning due to injury. Olivia Riitano (Abbot, ME) took over to start the fourth inning, pitching the rest of the game and earning the win. Garicia finished with only one run earned and three hits allowed. Riitano finished with two earned runs and allowed five hits. Kelsey Currier pitched the complete game for the Terriers finishing with 10 strikeouts.

A quiet first inning was followed with a big second for both teams. Kasey Champney started it off with a home run to right field for the Terriers. Following, a leadoff homer for Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA), her first of the year. With the game tied at one, back-to-back doubles brought in two runs. Marissa Valdivia Reagle's (Seattle, WA) two RBI double brought in Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, FL) and Roni Shaw (Payette, ID), who got on by an error by Thomas.

The next three innings consisted of some solid defense and great pitching for both teams. Diaz followed with a three RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth. Giving the Owls their sixth run of the game. The Terriers followed with a run in both the sixth and the seventh inning before UMPI was able to put the game away, 6-3.

Game 2

5-4, Thomas

Olivia Riitano (Abbot, ME) earned the start for the Owls, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing six hits and three earned runs. Marissa Valdivia Reagle (Seattle, WA) pitched the remaining 2.2 innings, finishing with one earned run and four hits allowed. Claudia Migliaccio earned the start for the Terriers while Kelsey Currier earned the save in the seventh inning.

It was all Terriers early as they scored two runs in the first innings, off a two fielding errors by the Owls. It was not until the fourth inning where there was any offense for either side, an RBI single gave the Terriers another run. Followed by another homer by Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE), her sixth of the year and giving the Owls their first run.

Thomas extended their lead to 4-1 with an RBI single in the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Hansen hit an RBI single. While Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) followed with another RBI single, bringing Hansen home and cutting the lead to just one. Again extending their lead, Thomas hit an RBI single to give them a two-run lead. Another quick answer by the Owls with an RBI single from Reagle, cut the lead back to one. The Terriers were able to put the game away in the seventh with a three and out by UMPI.

 

UMPI and Thomas will continue their doubleheader weekend with two more games tomorrow, 1 and 3 PM starts.
