Owls Finish 2-0 vs Beavers

Farmington, ME – The UMPI Owls Softball team traveled down south to take on North Atlantic Conference opponent UMF Beavers. The Owls finished the day 2-0 after a 6-4 victory in game one and 10-7 win in game two. These wins bring the Owls to 2-4 in the NAC, as they look to improve to 4-4 tomorrow, with another doubleheader vs UMF.

Game 1

6-4, UMPI

Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, CA) earned the start for the Owls on the mound, pitching the complete game finishing the seven innings with three strikeouts and only allowing three earned runs. Earning her first win of the year. Broghan Gagnon pitched the complete game for the Beavers. The Owls offense was in full effect throughout game one, finishing the game with 14 hits and four earned runs.

The first inning started off with a quick run, as lead off Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) got on base with a bunt, followed by two steals followed by an error by the Beavers catcher gave the Owls their first run of the game. It was Hansen again early as she hit a double in the second inning to bring Zoe Aylward-Frank (Kennebunk, ME) home, who got on base with a double herself.

A run by the Beavers in the bottom of the fourth inning gave them their first of the game. Although the Owls responded with another run in the top of the fifth. A double by Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) brought her in scoring position. Dalaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) brought Terry home with a single to right center.

It was not until the sixth that the Beavers offense began their surge. With the bases loaded, Makayla Wilson hit a three RBI double to give UMF the lead, 4-3 going into the seventh inning. Terry and Anfinson both singled to get on first and second. With two outs, Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) followed with a single to bring in, pinch runner, Halle Garner (Murray, UT) and tie the game. The game now tied, Delanie Strout (Greene, ME) gave the Owls a two-point lead with another clutch single bringing Shaw and Anfinson home. Despite the Beavers having a runner in scoring position, the Owls were able to put the game away.

Hansen and Terry finished the game each with three hits, while Anfinson and Strout finished the game with two apiece.

Game 2

10-7, UMPI

First year Olivia Riitano (Abbot, ME) got her first start of the year, and earning her first win on the mound for the Owls in game two. Riitano finished the game with one strikeout and six earned runs. Borghan Gagnon pitched the first 1.2 inning and Maddelyn Souza finished the remaining 5.1 innings for the Beavers.

Jordan Hansen (Phillips, NE) started the game with another single, soon making her way to third. Dalaney Anfinson (Green Cove Springs, FL) brought Hansen home with a SAC fly, giving the Owls their first run of the game. Karis Dankert (Dover Foxcroft, ME) followed immediately with a single giving the Owls a 2-0 lead early in the first.

In the second, Melanee Terry (Moreno Valley, CA) brought Hansen home, who got on with a single and advanced to third on a single from Delanie Strout (Greene, ME). This gave the Owls a 3-0 lead, but not for long as the Beavers offense began to get going. Two runs were scored by UMF in the second, from a bases loaded walk followed by a single.

A big third inning increased the Owls lead big time. With no outs, Halle Garner (Murray, UT) singled to bring a Dankert home. A passed ball, led to Roni Shaw (Payette, ID) scoring. Hansen singled for an RBI, bringing Zoe Aylward-Frank (Kennebunk, ME) home. Strout then doubled to bring Hansen home bringing the lead to five runs as the score was 7-2. Anfinson finished the inning with a two RBI single bringing Terry and Strout home and giving the Owls a 9-2 lead.

Another two-run inning for the Beavers in the fourth brought the score to 9-4. Aylward-Frank singled in the sixth to bring in Terry and give the Owls a 10-4 lead. Despite a surge in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Beavers were unable to complete the comeback as the Owls put the game away with the score of 10-7.

Hansen and Terry both finished the game with three hits apiece in the second game, each earning an RBI. Anfinson finished the game with two hits and three RBI's.
