Softball Team Sweeps Lyndon in Doubleheader Saturday

Game 1

In the opening game of the day between the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls and the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon Hornets, the Owls ran away with a 12-2 victory in five innings. 

After a scoreless first inning the Hornets would strike first in the top of the second inning.  With one out Cassandra Black reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Centerfielder Meghan Campo would hit a single advancing Black to third.  Amber Roberts would follow up with a RBI sac fly to right field scoring Black from third as the Hornets took a 1-0 lead. 

The Owls would come storming back in the bottom of the second inning scoring seven runs on nine hits. Mel Terry (So. Moreno Valley, CA) and Marissa Valdivia Reagle (So. Seattle, WA) would start off the inning with back to back doubles, with Reagle picking up a RBI.  Delanie Strout (Jr. Greene, ME) and Roni Shaw (So. Payette, ID) would hit back to back singles scoring Reagle as the Owls took a 2-1 lead and never looked back.  UMPI went on to score five more runs in the inning highlighted by a two-run single by Jordi Legassie.

In the top of the fourth and one out the Hornets would connect on back to back doubles to cut the UMPI lead to 7-2. Emma Moore doubled to get things started and scored on the next play on a Cassandra Black double.  UMPI would once again answer in the bottom of the inning with five runs on four hits and three errors to take a 12-2 lead. 

Brookelyn Garcia (So. Torrance, CA) would retire the side in order in the top of the 5th with two strikeouts as the Owls received the 12-2 win.  Garcia improves to 9-6 on the season picking up the complete game win throwing five innings, giving up two runs with only one of them earned on three hits, while striking out six. 

 

Game 2

The Owls would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer by Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, AZ).  The following inning, Brookelynn Garcia would retire the side in order and the Owls would get back to work on the offensive end in the bottom of the second scoring four runs on two hits and one error.  UMPI started off the inning with back to back walks.  Emily Page (So. Lincoln, ME) would step to the plate and rip a double scoring two runs as the Owls extended their lead to 4-0.  Page would score on a safety squeeze by Jordan Hansen adding another run for UMPI.  Later in the inning Duncklee would hit a line drive single to left field scoring Jordi Legassie (Sr. Presque Isle, ME) from second as the Owls took a 6-0 lead going into the third.

In the bottom of the fourth with one out Dunklee recorded her third hit of the game advancing to first.  Melanee Terry would follow with a double to left-center. Marissa Valdivia Reagle grounded out to short, picking up the RBI as Dunklee scored from third.  Delanie Strout would hit a double scoring Terry as the Owls extended their lead and taking the 8-0 win in five innings.

Garcia, Reagle, and Jordan Hansen (Fr. Phillips, NE) combined to throw the two-hit shutout.  Leading the way offensively for the Owls was Sarah Duncklee who went 3-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored.  Emma Corey and Casandra Black both singled for the Hornets.

 

Next up: The Owls play another doubleheader this evening at 5:00 and 7:00 PM vs Northern Vermont-Johnson.
