Owls Split a Doubleheader with the Clippers

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball team (2-13) hosted the Maine at Machias Clippers (6-7) for two matches on Wednesday night.  The Owls swept the first match before dropping the second by a score of 3-1.

UMPI def. UMM 3-0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-23)

In the first match the two teams played closely contested sets.  After an initial slow start, the Owls came roaring back in the first set to finally take it 28-26.  The next two sets saw UMPI lead for most of the way, and came out with a sweep.  The Owls would tally 43 kills and a .217 attack percentage.

Senior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, ME) lead the way with a strong performance, recording 21 kills and 19 digs.  Laura Aroz (FR, Tuscon, AZ) was also sharp in the match, tallying 33 assists.  Esmeralda Galvan (FR, Bullhead City, AZ) would contribute 18 digs, while Hannah Williams (SO, Park Falls, NS) would add 15 digs.  Colleen Kostovick (SO, Greenwood, ME) would lead the Clippers attack with eight kills.

UMM def. UMPI 3-1 (25-20, 25-6, 18-25, 25-23)

The Clippers would take control in the first set of the second match and lead for the majority.  A UMPI comeback attempt would fall short, and Machias would take advantage of the momentum swing, dominating the second set.  The Owls would return to their form from earlier in the evening to take the third set, and held a lead in the fourth.  The Clippers would rally, and take the fourth and final set by a score of 25-23.

Sara Boies (FR, Baileyville, ME) would lead the Owls with ten kills in the second match.  Jewett would add eight kills and 24 digs in the match.  Williams would contribute 21 digs and Galvan would add 20 in the effort.  For the Clippers it was Delaney Gardner (SO, Cooper, ME) who would lead the attack, picking up 12 kills.  Linda Riley (FR, North Anson, ME) would add ten kills.  Savannah Hayden (SR, Cato, NY) recorded 27 assists.

The Owls take some time off before travelling to Husson University on September 30th and October 1st.  They will face Husson, Castleton, Green Mountain, and Keene State that weekend as they open up Northern Athletic Conference play.
