Owls Win Second of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WORCESTER, MA – The UMPI Volleyball team continued its weekend road trip with a win over Lyndon State.  They then went on to face the host Becker College and lost in three straight sets.

UMPI def. Lyndon State 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15)

Hannah Williams (FR, Park Falls, NS) collected 30 assists and Abby Jewett (JR, Bass Harbor, ME) registered 15 kills to lead the Owls to their second win of the season.

Though starting in control in the first set, Maine Presque Isle had to come from behind to win the first set.  The two teams slugged it out, and the Owls found themselves down four, the biggest deficit held by either team to that point.  UMPI showed resiliency and fought back to take control of the match with the two point win.  The Owls would take the momentum and run with it,  as the second set was really never in any doubt.  Maine Presque Isle would run their lead to eleven at one point, before Lyndon State would start to chip away.  Despite losing the set, the late run of points might have served to turn the tide towards the Hornets, and they took advantage in the third set.  The Owls held the lead at 3-2, but weren't able to slow the Hornets down who forced a fourth set.  UMPI regrouped and dominated the fourth set, taking control throughout and winning the match 3-1.

Hannah Boyce (SR, Bar Harbor, ME) contributed 11 kills and six service aces in the winning effort.  Amanda Allen (SR, Limestone, ME) would lead the team with 17 digs.

Becker College def. UMPI 3-0

Becker came out in charge of the first set, running out to a 10-4 lead that was expanded to as many as 19 points (24-5) thanks to eight-straight points off Marissa Turner's (JR, Coventry, RI) serve. UMPI responded by getting out to an early lead in the second set, but the Hawks fought back to tie it at 15-15. The two teams went back-and-forth until a Turner ace and kill gave the Hawks a 21-19 advantage. Samantha Caouette (SR, Montague, MA) finished off the set with back-to-back kills. The Hawks jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the third set, but the Owls fought back to within 17-13. However, Becker righted the ship and put the match away thanks to two Kayla Dupree (FR, North Bergen, NJ) aces and a Turner kill.

Morgan Swan (SR, Caribou, ME) would lead the Owls with four kills.

The University of Maine at Presque Isle will be on the road next weekend as the travel to Machias to take on the Clippers in two matches.  The first is scheduled to start at 11 AM.
