OWLS DROP HOMECOMING CONTEST

Box Score

Maine-Presque isle hosted Maine-Machias for two volleyball contests Saturday, hoping to capitalize on Homecoming to gain the first win of the season.  Machias proved too difficult to handle, however, taking the first match 3-0 and the second 3-1.

The Clippers controlled the first match throughout the three games, using 17 total service aces to maintain advantages in the three games.  Heather Leonard paced the Clippers with four aces in the three games.  Shannon Brown and Abby Jewett tried to keep the Owls close with five kills each, however, mistakes on the serve return plagued Presque Isle.

In the second match, the Owls showed some life, using some bench spark from Leslie Theriault, who finished the match with seven kills, two solo blocks, and a block assist.  Despite dropping the first two games, Presque Isle rallied for a third-game victory to give the Homecoming crowd hope.  In Game 4, Machias was able to get command behind strong offensive kills from Leonard and three consecutive service aces from Alissa Campbell.  Abby Jewett stood out for the Owls on defense, grabbing seven digs in the second match.

The sweep moves the Clippers to 3-4 on the season, while UMPI drops to 0-13.  The women next play Sunday, September 27, at Lyndon State.
