Wieden Gymnasium

Wieden Gymnasium has been the site of UMPI home games for over 60 years. Dedicated to former president Clifford O.T. Wieden, it opened on April 2, 1960, and was built originally to house a gymnasium, a few classrooms, and an auditorium. There have since been various renovations to Wieden Hall, making it a much larger structure than when it was originally built. Wieden contains the Athletic Training wing located on the western end of the Gymnasium with state-of-the-art equipment for treating and keeping all student-athletes healthy and safe.

The UMPI Athletics Staff offices are also located on site, in the wing behind the bleachers. Wieden hall includes the Gauvin Family Center for Cultural Arts Auditorium which seats more than 400 people. Other amenities include a 24/7 batting cage for baseball and softball athletes, and a ceramics lab for art students. Most recently, Wieden underwent the biggest renovation project in history. Construction began in March 2022 for a newly refurbished gym that included a new floor, new bleachers, and a totally new ceiling and roof.

On January 6th, 2023, UMPI hosted its first home game in the new gym. While other construction to the rest of the building continued, UMPI was still able to host 18 home games that season. The floor was painted and finished for the 2023-24 sports season. The new bleachers are much more accessible than the old ones, with several cutouts on the front row so those who may be unable to sit on the bleachers can enjoy the game from the same vantage point as everybody else. The lighting is also much brighter and more vibrant than before providing for a better experience for everyone.

UMPI is proud to call Wieden Gymnasium home and is grateful for all the many fans that fill it.
