emily_mooreStandish, ME
– The University of  Maine at Presque Isle women's basketball team battled to a 66-46 loss at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine on Friday evening in the second game of the Merry Monk Tournament at the Harold Alfond Center.  Meghan Daigle ’10 (Grantham, NH) netted 16 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals in the triumph, which propeled the Monks into the Merry Monk Championship against Green Mountain College for the second-consecutive year.

The Owls put together a solid first half of play, giving the Monks a slim 26-24 lead going into the intermission after a closely-contested first 20 minutes. The Monks held an 18-12 lead after Freeman converted a pair of free throws at the 6:47 mark, but the Owls countered with a 12-4 outburst and went up by two, 24-22, when Emily Pelletier connected on a three-pointer just over four minutes later. Daigle and Geel made buckets for the hosts in the final minute to provide the Royal Blue with a two point cushion heading into the break.

Kilfoil scored the first basket of the second stanza to tie the game at 26 apiece and Presque Isle was able to maintain the two-possession deficit for the first five minutes of the latter half.  The Owls played with intensity and effort; however, through the second half fatigued became a factor as UMPI began to make mental errors on both ends of the court.

Saint Joseph’s received some breathing room when Allie Parent ’12 (Camden, ME) ignited a 10-2 run that saw the Monks take a 46-33 lead with 11:06 to go. The Owls led 15-10 after Julie Peers made a jumpshot at the 6:53 mark of the first half.  A UMFK surge ensued, as the Bengals took control of the game with a 14-2 run and giving them the 24-17 lead.  The Bengals took a 26-20 lead into the locker room at the half.

Presque Isle fought back with an 8-2 outburst in the opening minutes of the second 20, tieing the contest at 28-28; but, the Bengals outscored the Owls by a 20-9 margin for the remainder of play to earn a 48-37.  The Owls shot 27% from the field in the contest, and the young team still looks for opportunities to score through games.

Lady Owls Battle to a 57-38 Loss at UMaine Farmington
Saturday, 21 November 2009 02:47

Farmington, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's basketball team dropped their season opener 57-38 in a battle against the Beavers of UMaine Farmington.

The Owls started the game strong, keeping the score within one at 14-13, before UMF went on an 18-2 run midway through the first half on their way to a 41-17 command at intermission.  Everything fell for the Beavers, as they shot an impressive 45.7 percent (16-35) from the floor in the first, and then defensively stiffled the Owls to just an 18.2% shooting effort.

The relatively young Owl team, having only practiced four days together, came out strong and confident in the second half.  "I challenged them to keep their eyes focused on the second 20 minutes of the game and not on the scoreboard," commented Head Coach Tracy Guerrette.  "We chalked up the first half as experience, learned from it, and took the second 20 minutes as a game in itself.  We played with more poise, purpose, and defensive intensity, and though we lost the game, we won the second half 21-16."

The Owls derailed Farmington offensively in the second, forcing them to shoot just 16% from the floor.  The Owls slightly their offensive game with a 25% effort, as they were also outrebounded 48-34.  Emily Pelletier (Fort Kent, ME) led UMPI with 11 points with Julie Peers (Limestone, ME) adding eight points in the loss.  Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) lead the Beavers with 13 points and 10 rebounds on the night.

The Lady Owls return to action on Saturday, November 21, as they take on Curry College in the 1:00 pm consolation game of the UMF Tip-Off tournament.
