Women's Volleyball Wins Sunrise Conference Championship |

Standish, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball team defeated the Bengals of UMaine Fort Kent, 3-1, in the Championship game of the 2009 Sunrise Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon. UMFK earned the earlier win in the semi-final play-in game against fellow conference member UMaine Machias; the Owls, who finished first in the conference over the regular season, had a bye in the first round of the tournament. With the win, the Lady Owls close out their successful season at 18-4, as they repeat as Sunrise Conference Champions. |

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL - Player of the Week
Megan Korhonen (a junior, Setter from Littleton, Maine)
Megan is honored fro the third time this season after leading the Owls to two wins this week. The junior from Littleton, Maine, averaged 6.5 assists, 1.5 kilss, and 1.1 aces in her six games played this past weekend. She passed out 21 assists in a 3-0 win over the University of Maine at Machias and another 18 in a 3-0 win over Southern Vermont College.
MEN'S SOCCER - Co- Offensive Player of the Week
Joshua Peaslee (a junior, Midfield from Woolwich, Maine)
Josh is the co-winner this week after notching four points in a 5-0 win over Fisher College. The junior scored two goals in the shutout win.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY - Runner of the Week
Justin Fereshetian (a sophomore from Turner, ME)
Justin is recognized after capturing the individual men's championship at the Sunrise Conference championship at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The sophomore ran the race in a time of 29:00 (better his previous time on the course by around 50 seconds) and was named the Male Runner of the Year. Having also been named to the all-conference team, Justin also qualified for the NAIA National Championships, which will be held on November 21st in Vancouver, Washington. |

Lady Owls Volleyball Loses Two at MMA |

Castine, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball team lost two tough matches to the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. With both loses, UMPI moves to 12-4 on the year.
Match 1 scores were 25-23, 25-12, 25-17. Losing the first set was a heartbreaker for the Owls, who were never quite able to recover from the loss. Johanna Bubar (Riverview, NB) led the Owl offense with 7 kills, while Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) added 14 assists and 4 service aces. Michelle Ferry (Princeton, ME) led the defense with 18 digs; Ferry also had 4 kills in the match. Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) contributed 5 kills in the loss.
In the second match of the day, MMA prevailed 25-22, 25-23, 25-16. Ferry and Korhonen led their team on both ends of the game, each earning 6 kills in the match respectively, while Korhonen had 18 digs and Ferry finished with 14. Megan also picked up 16 assists and 4 service aces in the match.
"We really struggled receiving and in volleyball, everything starts with a good pass," commented Head Coach Terry Cummings. "MMA is a very good team, they can beat you in a number of different ways. This was good for us to play such a quality team as we prepare for the homestretch of our season and the Sunrise Conference Championship."
The Owls return to action on Saturday, October 24th where they'll be heading to UMaine Fort Kent for Sunrise Conference play against host UMFK, Paul Smith's College, and UMaine Machias. |

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Megan Korhonen (Junior from Littleton, ME) Megan repeats of Player of the Week after a dominating performance at the Sunrise Conference orund robin event a Paul Smith's College. The junior setter from Littleton, Maine led the owls to three wins after recording 72 assists, 18 kilss, 23 digs, and 11 service aces. She had 32 assists in a 3-0 win over the University of Maine at Machias and had 24 and 16 assists respectively in wins over Paul Smith and the University of Maine at Fort Kent.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Shelly Hanson (Junior from Charleston, ME) Shelly battled tough weather conditions to win this week's award. The junior finished in 87th place out of 290 runners at the Pop Crowell Invitiational at Gordon College. hanson recorded a time of 21:57 in the 5K race.

Paul Smith, NY - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball team swept their Sunrise Conference games this weekend held at Paul Smith's College in New York. With the three wins, the Owls improve to 12-2 on the year and remain undefeated in Sunrise Conference play.
In the opening match against host Paul Smith's, the Lady Owls picked up a 3-0 win, with individual match scores of 25-15, 25-12, 25-20. The second match against UMaine Machias resulted in a 3-0 win for the Owls; scores for the game were 25-9, 25-21, 25-5. The third and final match of the day was against UMaine Fort Kent, and again the Lady Owls won 3-0 with scores of 25-12, 25-4, and 25-23.
The Owls are currently on an eight match winning streak and 18-0 in their last six matches combined. UMPI will look to avenge one of their two loses on the season this weekend when they travel to Maine Maritime Academy, who is the defending NAC Champions. The last match against the two rivals was very close with MMA picking up the 3-0 win with scores of 27-25, 25-22, and 25-21. "We're looking forward to the rematch because our last match with them was very close and could have gone either way," stated Head Coach Terry Cummings. "Our girls have come along way since then, so it should be a great match-up."
The Owls travel to Castine to take on the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, October 10 at 11:00 am. This is followed by a match-up against Thomas College at 2:00 pm.

 Machias, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball team earned three big wins en route to winning the UMaine Machias Invitational tournament on Saturday. With the three wins, the Owls move to 9-2 on the season.
The Owls took care of Husson University, 3-0, in the first match of the day, defeating the Eagles for the third time in three weeks. UMPI followed their first victory up with a 3-0 win over Thomas College, before defeating host Machias, 3-0, in the last match-up of the tournament. "The team is working very hard as they contineu to develop into one of the better teams in the state," commented Head Coach Terry Cummings. The Owls are back in action this upcoming weekend as they head to Paul Smith's College in New York state for Sunrise Conference play on Saturday against host Paul Smith, UMaine-Fort Kent, and UMaine-Machias. "The team is hungrey to defend their Sunrise Conference Championship, they continue to push each other everyday to become a better team." |

Women's Volleyball - Player of the Week
Megan Korhonen (a Junior from Littleton, ME) - Megan wins the award after leading the Owls to four wins this week. The junior from Littleton, Maien collected 72 assists, including 22 in a win over Thomas College, 15 kilss, and 30 digs in 13 games. She had a double-double in a 3-0 win over Husson College with 18 assists and 12 digs. She also had two aces in that match. The UMPI volleyball team is currently 9-2 on the year.
Women's Soccer - Defensive Player of the Week
Makayla Gahagan (a Senior from Caribou, ME) - Makayla is honored after leading the Owls to a convincing 4-1 over Vermont Technical College. The senior from Caribou, Maine helped limit the Green Knights to just five shots on goal.
Men's Soccer - Offensive Player of the Week
Devon Peaslee (a Junior from Woolwich, Maine) - Devon is honored after notching 10 points in two games last week. The junior from Woolwich, Maine had one goal and one assist in a 3-0 win over Vermont Technical College. He followed that with three goals and one assist for seven points in a 6-1 win over the College of St. Joseph Vermont.

Bangor, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball team was no match for Husson defeating the Eagles 15-25, 25-22,15-25, 18-25 on Tuesday evening. With the win, UMPI improves to 6-2 on the season in their second victory of the year against Husson. The Owls were led by Michelle Ferry (Sr., Princeton, ME) who contributed 10 kills, 20 digs and 3 aces and Johannah Bubar (Jr., Riverview, NB) adding 8 kills, 3 aces, and 7 blocks.
The owls came out strong, setting the tone early with a 25-15 first set win, then pulling out a hard fought 25-22 second win. Middle Hitter Erica Davis (North Yarmouth, ME) led the way for the Owls in the second match up of the day, with 3 kills and one block. Ferry added 3 service aces and one block to go with 4 diggs. In the third set, Husson fought their way back into the match with a 25-15 win; Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) had six assists and two diggs. In the fourth set, UMPI came back strong to earn the 25-18 win. Ferry, Davis, Victoria Rowe (Houlton, ME) and Bubar all had each 3 kills respectively. Davis added 4 blocks, while Korhonen served up 9 assists, 24 total in the match.
A strong showing from Husson rookie Hannah Olstad contributing 9 kills and three blocks was not enough to beat the Owls. Other notable Husson performers include Kait McKay with 9 digs and 12 kills and Aleta Johnson with 9 digs and 12 kills.
The Owls will see action against Husson for the 3rd time in two weeks this Saturday, September 26, at the Machias Homecoming Invitational. Match time is set for 10:00 am. UMPI will also face Thomas College at 12:00 noon and take on host school UMaine Machias at 2:00 pm.

Senior Michelle Ferry
Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball moves to 5-2 on the season with a 3-0 win over Sunrise Conference rival UMaine Fort Kent on Saturday afternoon. The Bengals were easily defeated in three matches, 25-14, 25-13, 25-15.
The Owls dominated most of the match, as they showed both great team and individual play. "They are really coming together and are beginning to develop as a unity," commented head Coach Terry Cummings. "We have a big match with Husson on Tuesday evening in Bangor. We defeated Husson a couple of weeks ago, but we're looking for a competitive rematch."
The Owls travel to Husson on Tuesday evening for a 8:00 pm evening match, and are back in action on the weekend at the UMaine Machias Homecoming Tournament, where UMPI will face UMM, Thomas, and Husson for yet another time. |

Waterville, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle went 1-2 on the weekend at the Colby Invitational Tournament. With the win and two loses, the Owls move to 4-2 on the season.
On Friday night, UMPI lost to Bates College in a 3-0 decision, but came back strong in the first contest on Saturday beating Husson University 3-1. After dropping the 1st game of the match to the Eagles, UMPI came back to win three straight to earn the win. The last match of the tournament, against NAC Conference Champions Maine Maritime Academy, ended in a close 3-0 loss.
"Overall, the weekend was a great test for us," commented Head Coach Terry Cummings. "I was very pleased with our play because we showed that we can compete with the best teams from other conferences."
With the successful weekend, the volleyball team continues to improve and earn respect throughout the state as they look to build the UMPI program into oen of the best in Maine. |

Women's Volleyball during an early season practice
Waterville, ME - The University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball team started this season right where they left off - winning. The Lady Owls won all three of their weekend matches at the Thomas College Invitational in a 3-0 decision. With the three wins, UMPI moves to 3-0 on the season.
In Friday night's contest, the Owls defeat Massachusetts Maritime Academy 3-0, then went on to beat Elms College (3-0) and Thomas College (3-0) on Saturday afternoon. "This was a great way to start the season," commented head coach Terry Cummings, "we beat a very good Elms team and a much improved Thomas team." All players on the Owl squad contributed to the weekend success, as the team is already playing well despite the it being so early in the season. Coach Cummings looks ahead to continued improvement as the team heads to the Colby College Invitational this upcoming weekend for what should prove to be a measuring tool for the success of the rest of the season.
UMPI returns to action on Friday, September 11th as they face Bates College at 8:00 pm, followed by two matches on Saturday afternoon against Husson University (11:00 am start) and Maine Maritime Academy (game time at 1:30 pm). "Bates, Husson and Maine Maritime Academy are probably the three best teams we will play all year," noted Coach Cummings, "and to play them all on the same weekend can only make us better as we prepare to defend our Sunrise Conference Chamionship."
