This weeks winner of the UMPI Athlete of the Week is Kayla Legassie. Kayla ran the 5K course at the Colby College Invitational in 20:41 to finish in 4th place. The Senior from Presque Isle, Maine outran more than 50 runners from Colby, Husson, Maine Maritime, Thomas, Unity and UMaine-Machias, to finish only 27 seconds behind the eventual winner.
Legassie, a 2012 USCAA All-American has been a standout on the courses this running season, winning the USCAA National Runner of the Week Award for September 23-30. That week, the senior captain ran her first 6K race of the year in 24:55. Running against some of the best middle distance runner in New England, the 24:55 allowed Legassie to finish 30th in the 124 contestant race.
Earlier in the year, Legassie ran a technically outstanding race at the Husson University 5K to finish in 3rd place with a time of 22:12. Working well with the experienced mentor of the Owl Harrier program Chris Smith, Legassie is training hard to better her 2012 USCAA National Championship race time and hopefully looking to improve upon her 7th place finish last year.
