Brunswick, ME - In a very high quality field at Bowdoin College, the Owls of the University of Maine at Presque Isle ran to a 15th place finish of 18 teams in a preview of the New England D3 championships coming up on November 10th. The harriers of PI raced the course that will be contested on that date and showed marked improvement, finishing ahead of MMA, UM-Augusta, and Thomas. Within the same meet but scored separately, UMPI finished 9th out of 12 teams competing in the Maine State Championships.
The overall meet winner was Brandeis with 39 points, followed by Bates (43) and Tufts (89).
The UMPI runner showing the most improvement this week was Irina Norkin (Fr. Denmark, ME) who clocked the 6 kilometer course in 26:15 (116th of the 247 finishers). The Owls were led again by Valentine Degiovanni (Fr. Nice, France) who came in at 26:07 and 107th place. Following Degiovanni and Norkin was Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) in at 27:43 (159th place). The fourth and fifth scoring runners were Kendra Silvers (So. North Berwick, ME) and Chenoa Jackson (Sr. Wilton, ME), who finished 193rd/29:01 and 221st/31:17, respectively. Coach Chris Smith indicates that "we are on track improving steadily. The hard work is paying off and our better performances are yet to come."
Next up: The Owls next travel to St. Joesph's College in Standish for the Runnin' Monks Invitational on Saturday, October 6th.
