Wenham, MA - The Owls from Northern Maine swept down into Massachusetts on Saturday as they took on a much higher quality field at the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College. The result was a 10th place finish by the Owls in the 15 team field, ahead of Mass Maritime, Eastern Nazerene, Rivier, Curry, and NHTI. The team winner was U-New England, followed by Eastern Connecticut and Endicott.
Valentine Degiovanni (Fr. Nice, France) was again first in for the Owls, coming in at 19th spot (24:59) of the 149 finishers. The 6 kilometer event, the distance to be run in next week's state championships and again at the New England championship meet, was a test for all runners, it being a kilometer longer than the usual 5K. Following Degiovanni was Emmy Churchill (Jr. Washburn, ME) in 69th, and Irina Norkin (Fr. Denmark, ME) 80th (28:06).
The next two Owls in, rounding out the scoring, were Kendra Silvers (So. North Bewick, ME) and Chenoa Jackson (Sr. Wilton, ME), finishing in 91st (28:52) and 114th (31:18) places, respectively. The UMPI team score of 276 paced the squad to their 10th position. Other finishers for the Owls were Rebecca Griffin of Hodgdon, ME (139th, 38:11) and Jenny Sanborn of Sangerville, ME (146th, 46:07).
