In their last test before the USCAA national championships to be held on November 8, the UMPI Lady Owls ran the six kilometer course over the tough and unforgiving home turf on Saturday in a dual meet against Unity College.

Even though Unity did not field a full team, each runner worked on personal challenges with specific goals having been set.  The extra kilometer was added at the end of the usual five kilometer distance making for a fast finish in front of the home town fans.

A bit of exuberance caused a few harriers to start a bit quickly, but the goal was run hard and become accustomed to the longer distance, run once before at Bowdoin College on September 28.  Kayla Legassie ran a fast opening mile at 6:16 and went on to finish the race with a winning time of 25:21.  Legassie looked good as she ran the home course faster than last year's nationals course without being rested or peaked as she will be in two weeks time.

"Additionally," indicates Coach Chris Smith, "Kayla was not pushed in this race, finishing better than four minutes ahead of her nearest challenger.  She will have her hands full in two weeks out in Syracuse on the SUNY-ESF host course."

Very strong performances were turned in by Destinee Neureuther (3rd , 30:43), Ghaz Sailors (4th, 32:42,  Breanna Kafka (5th, 34:28), and Shawna McDonough (6th, 36:37) solidified the strong team finish.
