The Lady Owl harriers got a Friday evening viewing of a technical cross country course before Saturday's Colby College Invitational, a trial run for the Maine State Championships coming up on October 19th. The experience was beneficial in laying out individual strategies as the terrain contrasted markedly with the flat Bowdoin College course toured a week earlier.
Senior standout Kayla Legassie had a good look at this course, to be soon repeated at states, against quality competition from Thomas College, Maine Maritime Academy, Husson College, and host Colby. Legassie passed the mile mark in 10th place with a 6:36 split before working up into fourth place over the second, very technical middle portion. Her efforts over the last 1.1 miles secured that position in clocking the 5k terrain in 20:41.
Ghaz Sailors was unable to complete the course due to a previous injury aggravated by the hilly first mile. The typically tough and competitive second year runner from Santa Barbara, California dropped out against her will in choosing to look ahead in preparing for future endeavors.
Destinee Neureuther set a solid pace over this first mile before settling in for the even more hilly and difficult second mile. She retraced her steps for the balance of the 5k distance to come in 29th at 25:16 in the 52 runner field. Breanna Kafka and Shawna McDonough ran 27:12 (37th) and 32:16 (50th), respectively.
The Lady Owls now move into a planned weekend off from competition before returning to this same course looking to improve on performances.
