The Lady Owls ran up against very stiff competition on Saturday at the 2013 Bowdoin Invitational, a fact well known going in. The quality competition included the likes of Tufts University, Bates College, and Colby-Sawyer. The UMPI harriers all turned in improved times when the longer course was taken into consideration, up from the usual 5K to 6K.
Kayla Legassie again led the way in finishing 30th in the field of 124, clocking the 3.72 mile course in 24:55. Her early pace of 6:17 at the mile placed her in the top 35 spots, a position she improved upon throughout the balance of the race.
Ghaz Sailors and Destinee Neureuther finished at 97th/28:58 and 104th/29:50, respectively. These two along with Breanna Kafka and Shawna McDonough (117th/31:31, 124th/33:54) worked to run even splits, a goal made difficult at this new race distance, the first for Neureuther, McDonough, and Kafka.
The Lady Owls placed 39 points ahead of Maine Maritime Academy, 255-294, a first for the 2013 campaign. The next developmental race will take place at Colby College on October 5th, a preview of the October 19th Maine State Championships.
