The 2013 members of Owls women's cross country may be low in numbers but they are high in enthusiasm. This year's contingent is led by returning 2012 First Team All-American senior Kayla Legassie (Presque Isle, Maine, Presque Isle High School) and powerhouse three-season athlete Ghazaleh Sailors (Santa Barbara, CA, San Marcos High School).
Graduation of many experienced harriers from the 2012 seventh place USCAA nationals finishing squad makes this a bit of a rebuilding year, which is natural according to Coach Chris Smith, now in his 24th year at the helm of the women's program. "We look to be an enthusiastic group with the common goal of improving steadily over the course of the season. Relatively inexperienced high school recruits are expected to make more of a commitment at this college level, a necessity for their own development. They certainly look to be up to the challenge".
Three first year runners will be rounding out the Owls, including Destinee Neureuther (freshman, Houlton, Maine, Greater Houlton Christian Academy), Breanna Kafka (freshman, West Enfield Maine, Penobscot Valley High School), and Shawna McDonough (sophomore, Alexander, ME, Woodland Jr./Sr. High School).
