Bangor, Maine. - The Owls women's cross country team got their feet wet, both figuratively and literally, at the inaugural Husson College Invitational at Saxl Park in Bangor. This first test was a good indicator of abilities and experience for the "Fab-Five".
Kayla Legassie, last year's seventh place USCAA nationals finisher and First Team All-American, raced to perfection in placing herself within the top spots by the two mile mark. After bearing down the last 1.1 miles she moved from eight to third place, clocking the 3.1 mile soft and occasionally wet course in 22:12, just :26 off the winning time of 12:46 posted by Husson's Chrissy Larrabee.
Freshman Destinee Neureuther finished at 27:47, good enough for 25th place in the 43 runner field. The Owls team score of 79 was but six points off third place team Maine Maritime Academy. Ghaz Sailors finished in 27th/28:44, being a bit hampered by an early race injury, and was followed by Breanna Kafka (42nd/34:48), and Shawna MacDonough (43rd/35:31) in her first ever cross country race.
The Lady Owls next race at the University of New England Invitational in Biddeford next Saturday.
