This first 2012 race at the 6K distance was the perfect test for the women of the UMPI cross country team. Kayla Legasse (Presque Isle, ME) got out quickly even though trailing Unity's Courtney Dotterweich at the mile split and soon thereafter caught her, the winner of last week's Yankee Conference championship race held in Concord, New Hampshire. Nicole Green (Caribou, ME) almost cracked the 25 minute barrier as well in running a seasons best performance even considering the longer distance. Kati Christoffel (Clifton Park, NY), last year an eighth place finisher at USCAA nationals, appears to be on pace to improve on that result in running this race 48 seconds faster than her nationals time from last year. Emily Wright (Mapleton, ME), Ghaz Sailors (Santa Barbara, CA). and Carly Langley (Truro, NS) rounded put the scoring for the Owls.
Coach Smith's comments:
"Pacing was the order of the day as we moved up to the 6K distance in this one as we will at nationals in two weeks. This low keyed race allowed us to stay focused and not get caught up in the excitement of a larger one like we'll see in Lake Placid on the 9th. We'll be tapered and set to lay it out then."
Next meet: USCAA National Championships at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York
