BUCKSPORT, Maine – The University of Maine at Presque Isle produced the first five runners across the finish line at the Mainer Invitational at Bucksport High School. The Owls' Kayla Lagasse (Presque Isle, Maine ) won the three-mile event with a time of 19:51. Maine Maritime finished in second place, while last year's team champions, Thomas College, finished in third.
Legasse owned a 59 second gap on the field of 18. Her teammate, Kati Christoffel (Clifton Park, N.Y.) crossed in 20:50, followed by defending individual champion, Emily Wright (Mapleton, Maine) in 22:17. First-year runner, Ghazaleh Sailors (Santa Barbara, Calif.) logged a 22:23 for fourth place, while Carly Langley (Truro, N.S.) completed the UMPI scoring sweep with a 22:31 for fifth place.
Maine Maritime owned the next four places with Emily Fanning (New Boston, N.H.) running in front for the Royal and Gold in 23:53. Samantha DePlanche (Dover, N.H.) finished seventh overall with a 24:47, while freshmen Catherine Bailey (Scarborough, Maine) and Virginia Tolbert (Lisbon, Maine) crossed in eighth and ninth, respectively. Bailey logged a 25:03 with Tolbert two seconds in tow. Classmate, Gabrielle Wells (Kittery, Maine) rounded out the Mariners' scoring with a 25:39 for 11th place overall.
Thomas' Jessica Stackpole (Biddeford, Maine) broke up the Mariners' lock on places five through 10 with a 25:08 for 10th place. Chelsie Morris (Livermore Falls, Maine) finished in 12th place with a time of 25:29. Amanda Dion (Foxboro, Mass.) and Samantha Felbaum (Saco, Maine) took 14th and 15th places, respectively. Dion clocked a 27:19 while Felbaum raced a 30:21. Rachel Clark (Oakland, Maine) rounded out Thomas' entry with a 37:22 for 18th place.
Maine Maritime and Thomas return to action next weekend at the North Atlantic Conference Championships. UMPI returns to action next Saturday at Unity.
