(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- 2011 saw some very successful individual performances from the UMPI cross country teams. Justin Fereshetian (Sr./Turner, ME), Philip Boody (Fr./New Sweden, ME), and Kati Christoffel (Jr./Clifton Park, NY) consistently put up competitive times throughout the season. What was missing at times were the Owls qualifying for team scores in events as 5 runners are needed to register.
The result was a successful individual season that saw the Owls send 8 runners to the USCAA National Championships in Lake Placid, NY.
In 2012, the goal is clear: continue the individual progress while putting together more solid performances in team results.
With the return of Boody on the men's side and 2011 UMPI Female Athlete of the Year Christoffel, Carly Langley (Jr./Truro, NS), and Emily Wright (So./Mapleton, ME) ofor the women, both teams have a good core of experience in 2012.
Throw in newcomers Kayla Legassie (Fr./Presque Isle, ME), Thomas Grylka (Fr./East Hampton, CT), and brothers Tyler & Garrett Hilton (Fr./Charleston, ME) and the Owls appear on the way to achieving their goal of individual AND team success.
"All athletes run to their potentials, particularly at the critical times (state and nationals), says UMPI Hall of Fame head coach Chris Smith. "The key to this is to stay consistent in training while focusing on rest and recovery techniques."
