Boston, MA – The University of Maine at Presque Isle women's volleyball team traveled to Mass. to take on Emerson College and Simmons University in two game day. The Owls were unable to take a set in either one of the matches, despite some very close sets.
UMPI vs Emerson
The Owls first match between Emerson finished in a three game sweep, as the Lions came away with the victory (25-22, 25-8, 25-19).
Set 1: 25-22, Emerson
A slow start for the Owls brought them to a three-point deficit early, before a five-point rally gave them a 9-7 lead. Some more back and forth play brought the score to 19-14 in the Owls favor. The Lions answered with a three-point run followed by a five-point run to help put the first set away.
The Owls finished the first set with five kills on 29 attempts, also recording five hitting errors. The Lions finished the first set with 12 kills and 10 hitting errors all on 41 attempts.
Set 2: 25-8, Emerson
The Lions continued to keep their momentum in the second set. The Owls were able to briefly hold the lead early on with the score 3-2 in the Owls favor. Before the Lions began their run, scoring six points in a row. Eventually putting the game away on another run, this one a seven-point run.
The Lions were able to hold the Owls to zero kills on 15 attempts in the second set, while they finished with 13 kills on 23 attempts and only five errors.
Set 3: 25-19, Emerson
The Owls responded well with a big run to start the game, giving them an early 7-2 lead over the Lions. A quick answer, followed by some back and forth play, brought the score to 16-14 as the Owls still held the lead. It was then that the Lions went on a 7-point run to give them the advantage late. Despite a hard fought battle at the end, the Lions came away with the victory, and completing the sweep.
As the Owls were more aggressive in the final set, they recorded five kills on 33 attempts. While the Lions finished with 13 kills on 41 attempts.
In the three set match, the Owls finished with ten kills on 77 attempts. Led by Paige McArthur (USMC), with four kills on 21 attempts, also tied for the most digs with eight. Alexis Engel (Burns, WY)also finished with eight digs to go along with her one kill. Kaya Amoroso (Milo, ME) lead the team with eight assists.
UMPI vs Simmons
The Owls finish their season opener day, with a match vs Simmons University Sharks. Losing the three sets, 25-10, 25-16, 25-22.
Set 1: 25-10, Simmons
Simmons started off strong with a 11-4 start to the match, never letting the Owls settle down. The Sharks runs continued as they finished the first set on an 11-1 run.
The Owls were able to attack the net 28 times, finishing the set with six kills. Despite the Sharks 34 attempts, the Owls held them to only nine kills in the first set.
Set 2: 26-16, Simmons
Although the second set started in similar fashion, the Owls were able to come on strong in the end of the second set. With the score 16-6, in the Sharks favor, the Owls were able to bring the score within six points. Although the efforts were not enough as the Sharks put away their second set.
The Owls defense continued to work hard, as the Sharks finished the second set with another 34 attempts, with 11 kills. The Owls offense continued to struggle with only five kills on 24 attempts.
Set 3: 25-22, Simmons
The third set, was an entirely different game then the previous two. The Owls and the Sharks continued to battle back and forth throughout the third set. The back and forth brought the score to 13-13, halfway through the match. The Sharks were able to work a small edge later in the set with a four-point lead late. Which they were able to put away despite a late three-point run by the Owls.
The Owls offense had its best performance of the day in the third set, as they finished with seven kills on 32 attempts. The Sharks continued their consistency with 13 kills on 41 attempts.
The Owls defense and offense way lead by Paige McArthur (USMC) as she recorded a team high seven kills on 22 attempts, while also recording 16 of the teams 52 digs on the match. Makayla Miskiewicz (Orlando, FL) finished the second match with four kills on 24 attempts while also recording nine digs.
