Presque Isle, ME - The University of Maine Presque Isle Women's Volleyball Team took on an experienced and talented UMFK (18-4) squad today at Wieden Hall losing the first of two matches by a 3 to 0 score. The Owls (7-13) battled throughout the match losing the first set 25-18. Each time UMPI would narrow the gap Bengals Junior Marisol Kirkendall would come up with sensational digs to keep the ball alive when it appeared that UMPI would get the point.
In the second set Me-Presque Isle got out to a quick 3 to 1 lead and had the score deadlocked at 14 to 14 before UMFK would rattle off 5 straight points. Savanna Deavult (Fr. Hanford, CA) would have an impressive kill and score for the Owls to briefly slow the UMFK attack, however, the Bengals would then go on a run and close out the set 25 to 16.
Set #3 was a grind as both teams competed with great intensity. There were a number of times during the set where continuous volley between the two opponents had the crowd thrilled with the action. UMPI was determined to win the set and took a 1 point lead on three occassions late in the game before Me-Fort Kent would battle back and win 28 to 26.
For UMaine-Presque Isle, sophomore Miranda Washinawatok had team highs in kills with 9 and digs with 35, along with 2 blocks. Junior setter Laura Aroz paced the Owls with 16 assists and added 4 digs, while Junior Devine Hoskie recorded 17 digs for her team. The Bengals outside hitter Luse Lumas had 10 kills in 31 attempts along with 4 digs. Setter Haley West had 14 assists, 6 digs and 6 blocks and Kirkendall finished the first game with 22 digs.
In the second match of the afternoon UMPI (7-14) fell to UMaine-Fort Kent (19-4) in three straight sets losing the first set 25-19, set number two 25-15, and the third set by a 25-15 score.
Leading the way for UMFK was Rachel Nance with 14 kills, 24 attempts and 6 blocks. Ashlyn Ferriera had 18 assists and 7 digs, while Junior Marisol Kirkendall recorded 21 digs. For UMPI Miranda Washinawatok (So. Shawano, WI) had 10 kills, only 2 errors and 23 digs. Devine Hoskie (Jr. Shonto, AZ) recorded 27 digs and setter Laura Aroz (Jr. Tucson, AZ) had 18 assists and 5 digs.
Next up: The Owls will travel to Northern Vermont-Johnson where they will play SUNY Canton on Friday October 19th at 12:00PM, and on Saturday October 20th they will face Northern Vermont-Johnson at 10:00AM and Northern Vermont-Lyndon at 12:00PM
