Wenham, MA - The UMPI Women's Volleyball Team lost two matches today played at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. In the 12:00 match, the Owls (7-8) lost in 3 sets to Rivier University (13-5). The Raiders won the first set 25-17, the second set 25-18 before narrowly winning the third set over Me-Presque Isle 25-21.
Rivier whose roster includes three players at 6'0" and one at 6'2", showed their dominance at the net recording 43 kills as a team in the 3 sets to the Owls 14. Courtney Collins led a balanced attack for the Raiders with 10 kills while Joy Maswoswee added 8 kills and 12 digs and Allison Zagami had 8 kils and 14 digs. Setter's Avery Pollard and Katherine Antzak had 19 and 18 assist respectively.
UMPI was led statistically by Miranda Washinawatok (So. Shawano, WI) with 6 kills and 9 digs. Maddi Tweatt (Jr. Middleton, ID) recorded 3 kills and 13 digs and setter Laura Aroz (Jr. Tucson, AZ) had 12 assists and 8 digs.
In the 2:00PM match Gordon (9-8) won the first set 25-12 over the Owls (7-8) with a match-high 17 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. The Fighting Scots then went on and took the second set 25-8, the third set 25-15, and a sweep of the match 3-0. Gordon had 39 kills for the match to UMPI's 10.
Outside Hitter Mackenzie Hinds recorded 15 kills in the match. Freshman Marla Batson and Junior Jamie Tafoya both notched 8 kills. Tafoya had 5 aces as did Hayley Robinson. Sophomore setter Ashlyn Gergins dished out a game-high 33 assists for the Home team.
Miranda Washinawatok had 4 kills, 1 ace and 4 digs for the Owls while Maddi Tweatt had 5 assists, 1 block and 3 digs and Laura Aroz added 5 assists.
Next up: UMPI will travel to the University of Maine at Fort Kent on Wednesday October 3rd for two matches with the Bengals at 5:00PM and at 7:00PM.
