Gorham, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Volleyball Team squared off against Castleton State and the USM Huskies on the Campus of The University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls (5-5) defeated the Spartans (0-9). Castleton took the first set of the match from UMPI, 25-19, but the Owls turned it around in the following sets as they closed out the match with set wins of 25-9, 25-17 and 25-11.
UMPI Outside Hitter Devine Hoskie (Jr. Shonto, AZ) posted a triple-double with 12 kills, 13 aces and 13 digs. Outside Hitter/Middle Blocker Miranda Washinawatok (So. Shawano, WI) led all players with 17 kills, and setter Laura Aroz (Jr. Tucson, AZ) dished out 35 assists.
For Castleton, sophomore Shannon Manchester of West Hartford, Connecticut had seven kills. Senior Brianna Hake of St. George, Vermont passed out 10 assists, and sophomore libero Meghan Zawatsky of Massachusetts contributed 13 digs.
In the Owls second match of the day, UMPI fell to the University of Southern Maine (9-4) in three straight sets 25-10, 25-10, and 25-16.
Laura Aroz (Jr. Tucson, AZ) once again did a nice job setting up her temmates accumulating 17 assists. Devine Hoskie (Jr. Shonto, AZ) had a team high 12 digs to go along with 8 kills, while Maddi Thweatt (So. Middleton, ID) recorded 11 digs. Miranda Washinawatok (So. Shawano, WI) added 3 digs with a team high 9 kills.
The Huskies used a balanced attack to dispatch with the Owls. Junior Megan Gettings, rookie Alexis Dow and sophomore Jamie Jannarone had six kills apiece. Kacey Foerster and Kylee Austin chipped in with five more. Rachel Chillé had five service aces and five digs for USM.
Next up: Me-Presque Isle will play 2 matches at Unity College on Sunday September 23rd vs. the Rams and against Green Mountain College.
