Owls Hang Tough, Lose Two

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The Owls Volleyball team (11-18) squared off against Emerson (12-12) and Salem State (11-12) on Saturday, both matches being played at Emerson College.  UMPI was swept by a score of 3-0 in both of their matches.

Emerson def. UMPI 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-22)

The Owls would rally from a deficit in the second set to take a brief lead, and take an early lead in the third set, but Emerson would overtake their guests and sweep the match.

Maddi Thweatt (FR, Middleton, ID) paced the Owls with eight kills and six digs.  Miranda Washinawatok (FR, Shawano, WI) was the defensive leader, picking up eight digs and a solo block to go with her five kills.  Taylor Johnson (FR, Eagle, ID) added seven digs, four kills, and three assists to the Owls' effort.

Salem St. def. UMPI 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 26-24)

The Owls would play three tightly contested sets with Salem St., ending up on the losing end of all three.

Thweatt would again lead the UMPI attack, ending with ten kills and 19 digs.  Washinawatok produced eight kills while stepping up with 18 digs.  Johnson tallied seven kills and 12 digs, while Esmeralda Galvan (SO, Bullhead City, AZ) would aid the defense with 11 digs.  Brittney Harper (FR, East Mountain, NS) set up the offense with 22 assists.

The Owls are at Fort Kent on Wednesday and will meet up with the Bengals for the fourth and fifth time this year in a doubleheader of action.  Those matches are scheduled to start at 5 pm.
