MACHIAS, ME – The UMPI Volleyball team (6-9) took two sets from the Machias Clippers (5-8) on the road Wednesday night. The Owls would win the first set 3-1 before sweeping the second one 3-0.
UMPI def. Machias 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-11, 25-5)
The Owls would finish with a .219 attack percentage and top the Clippers 40-15 in kills, 30-12 in assists, 17-7 in service aces, and 62-23 in digs.
Miranda Washinawatok (FR, Shawano, WI) would top the Owls with 13 kills to go with her seven service aces. Maddi Thweatt (FR, Middleton, ID) ended with a double-double, as she had 11 kills and led the team with 19 digs. Hannah Williams (JR, Park Falls, NS) had 17 digs and Ashlon Stroub (FR, Bakersfield, CA) added 12 digs. Brittney Harper (FR, East Mountain, NS) and Laura Aroz (SO, Tucson, AZ) would split setter duties, with Harper collecting 13 assists, and Aroz ending with ten.
UMPI def. Machias 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-23)
UMPI continued to dominate Machias in the stat totals in the second matchup, leading in all major categories, including 34-13 in kills, 24-7 in assists, 9-2 in service aces, 83-8 in digs, and had no ball handling errors while the Clippers would misplay the ball 14 times.
Thweatt would tally 11 kills, while also collecting an impressive 22 digs. Washinawatok would also end in double digit kills with ten. Taylor Johnson (FR, Eagle, ID) had 16 digs, Esmeralda Galvan (SO, Bullhead City, AZ) had 12, and Stroub and Williams finished with 11 apiece. Harper would have 20 assists for the Owls.
With the two wins the Owls have surpassed their win total from the 2016 season and still have 17 regular season matches left.
The Owls will travel to Southern Maine on Saturday for two matches. The first match begins at 10 am.
