Volleyball Drops Four

STANDISH, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Volleyball team (3-5), despite coninued improvement in their second weekend of play, dropped all four sets in the Saint Joseph's College Autumn Invitational this weekend.

St. Joseph's College (ME) defeats UMPI 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-18)

The Monks controlled the pace from start to finish in what was the team's first shutout victory of the season, as the tourney hosts held commanding advantages in hitting percentage (.250 - .046), kills (43-20), assists (43-19), aces (7-1), and total blocks (11-1) with a 58-54 lead in digs in the first match of the evening.

Saint Joseph's was led by Kelsey Bickford (SO, Somersworth, NH), who tallied 16 kills in 38 attempts for a .316 attack rate, and Jordynne Copp (SR, Cumberland, ME), who belted 13 kills in 24 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage along with five total blocks. Sarah Dyer (JR, Seabrook, NH) boasted 36 assists with four kills and five digs while Jennelle Thompson (JR, Farmington, NH) contributed 26 digs and three aces and Sophia Randall (FR, Epping, NH) posted 11 digs in the victory.

The Owls were paced by Miranda Washinawatok (FR, Shawano, WI), who registered eight kills in 34 attempts, and Maddi Thweatt (FR, Middleton, ID), who chipped in with 13 digs and four kills.

Husson def. UMPI 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 26-24)

The Eagles fought off a feisty Owls team in a three-set victory that required nearly two hours to complete. With a negative hitting percentage (-.015), UMPI managed to stay in the game due to 21 Husson attack errors, but in the end the Eagles' 35 kills outplayed the Owls' meager sum of 21 in a shutout defeat.

For Husson, Mary Grace Power (SO, Bellerose Village, NY) delivered 10 kills with a .259 attack rate, Bailey Cote (SR, Biddeford, ME) chipped in with 10 kills and four block solos, Riley Mooers (SO, Mount Desert, ME) notched a double-double with 21 digs and 15 assists along with four kills, and Delaney Chisholm (SO, Tewksbury, MA) added 18 digs.

For Maine-Presque Isle, Taylor Johnson (FR, Eagle, ID) recorded seven kills, 13 digs, and a pair of solo blocks, Hannah Williams (JR, Park Falls, NS) tossed in 18 digs, and  Brittney Harper (FR, East Mountain, NS) dealt 14 assists with three kills and seven digs.

UMFK def. UMPI 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 25-12)

Payton Spragling (JR, Pearl City, HI) rattled off 19 kills in 56 attempts with 30 digs and three aces to help the Bengals work past the Owls in a four-set triumph. Adriana Gutierrez (JR, Lindsay, CA) added 13 kills in 54 attempts with 24 digs while Haley West (JR, Redding, CS) dealt 46 assists with five digs and Kamalani Kahele (SR, Kalihi, HI) was credited with 37 digs in the victory.

For the Owls, Washinawatok posted 11 kills and nine digs, Thweatt netted 10 kills and five digs, Harper added 22 assists and seven digs, and Esmeralda Galvan (SO, Bullhead City, AZ) chipped in with 16 digs in the setback.

Husson def. UMPI 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-20, 25-13)

Riley Mooers (SO, Mount Desert, ME) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs as well as three aces to help the Eagles defeat the Owls for the second time in as many days and claim the SJC Autumn Invitational Consolation match. Nia Arranaga (SR, San Jose, CA) boasted nine kills and a .227 attack rate with three aces and four total blocks, Hannah Hembrow (SO, Milford, NH) and Cote chipped in with eight kills apiece, and Chisholm contributed 23 digs in the victory. Hembrow added 28 assists and 12 digs to an impressive stat line.

For the Owls, Washinawatok tallied nine kills and 10 digs, Johnson tacked on six kills and 10 digs, and Galvan and Williams both posted 18 digs in the setback.

Taylor Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Owls. 

"The team came together on the second day, taking games from Husson and UMFK," said Head Coach Jonathon Bowman.  "Everyone stepped up to a higher level of competitionthis weekend to start realizing the potential of this team.  Some of our opponents have already reached their potential.  This team is just going to get better every week."

UMPI will travel to Becker College next Saturday.  They will square off with Becker (2-4) at 11 am, and then face Albertus Magnus College (3-3) at 1 pm.
