Owls' Volleyball Swept on Road in 2011 Opener

Castine, Maine -- There was no "easing in" to the new season for the University of Maine-Presque Isle women's volleyball team. The Owls' were unable to capture a game in 4 matches this weekend, dropping two to hosts Maine Maritime Academy on Friday night, 25-8, 25-5, 25-13 in the opener and 25-8, 25-6, and 25-8 in the nightcap.

The Mariners, winners of four straight North Atlantic Conference championships, and qualifiers in the last four NCAA Division III National Tournaments, flexed their muscle early and often over the weekend, going 4-0 without dropping a game. The Owls took another crack at MMA on Saturday, testing the hosts before ultimately succumbing 25-11, 25-13, 25-9. In that match, the Owls'Karen Crieghton (Sr., Sussex, NB) led all players with 7 digs.

Saturday began for UMPI with a tight 25-17, 25-11, 25-19 loss to Leslie University.

The Owls return to action next Friday September 9, when they open up the home portion of their schedule to face SUNY-Canton (5pm) and UMaine-Fort Kent (7pm).
