Presque Isle, ME -- University of Maine at Presque Isle's women's volleyball head coach Jay Beaulieu knew coming into this 2011 season that with 6 freshmen on an 8 player roster, his squad would have to endure some growing pains. Friday night at Wieden Hall on the UMPI campus was one of those nights. Beaulieu's Owls were swept in a pair of matches, falling 3-0 first to SUNY-Canton and then to UMaine-Fort Kent by the same 3-0 margin.
SUNY-Canton got out to big leads in each of the first two games against the Owls building a two-games-to-none lead over the Owls by scores of 25-9 and 25-8. UMPI fell behind early in the third game as well, but were able to battle back before ultimately falling, 25-20. Karen Crieghton (Sr./Sussex, NB) was effective for the Owls in short range and long distance tallying 4 blocks and 4 kills up at the net while also serving up 3 aces.
In the nightcap, UMPI and UMFK played three see saw affairs that ultimately the Bengals were able to come out on top of each, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22. Randi Kaplan (Fr./Embden, ME) paced the Owls with 8 assists.
The losses drop the Owls to 0-6 on the season and still in search for their first game or match wins of the season.
The same teams will do battle tomorrow, Saturday, September 9th. The venue however will move to the UMFK campus. UMPI will take on SUNY-Canton at 10am and UMFK at 2pm.
