Fort Kent, ME 9/17/11 – Results have been slow to come for the 2011 University of Maine-Presque Isle women's volleyball team. Coach Jay Beaulieu's young and at times short-handed squad has taken its share of lumps early this season, but with each match he saw improvement. That improvement final paid off in the form of the team's first win on Saturday against Unity College. Playing at the University of Maine-Fort Kent, the Owls defeated Unity, 3-2 (13-25, 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 16-14).
"We were much improved this weekend," said Coach Beaulieu, "Our intensity increased with on-the-floor digs and consistent hard hits."
Leading the hard hitting was senior Karen Creighton (Sr./Sussex, NB) who had 9 kills in the contest.
The night was not over for the Owls as they had to take on the host UMaine-Fort Kent a few hours later. After taking the first game, UMPI eventually fell to the Bengals in 4 hard fought sets (20-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-23).
The split for the day helped the Owls improve to 1-11 overall this season.
The Owls will play next tomorrow, Sunday September 18th, when they host Unity College and the University of Maine-Machias. Match times will be 1:00pm and 3:00pm respectively.
