CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer defeated UMaine-Presque Isle 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division Quarterfinal matchup at Ritchie Field.
How it Happened: The top-seeded Mariners got on the board quickly in the second minute when Margot Simeon connected with Kelsey Bern to give Maine Maritime a 1-0 lead.
Simeon added a goal of her own in the 56th minute when she headed in a ball from teammate MacKenzie Carter (Ashland, ME) to make it 2-0.
Alexis Ireland found the back of the net for the Owls in the 70th minute, but the Mariners answered right back when Carter scored on a ball from Emma White just 64 seconds later, to keep Maine Maritime's lead at two (3-1). Carter added her second goal of the game in the 74th minute to send the Mariners to a 4-1 win.
Inside the Numbers: The Mariners held a 17-15 advantage in shots and a 10-9 edge in corner kicks. Bess MacArthur collected 10 saves in net to earn the victory for the Mariners, while UMPI's Savannah Rodriguez (Presque Isle, ME stopped nine shots in the loss.
