Presque Isle, ME - The Owls Women's Soccer Team (1-9) got that elusive first win of the season with excellent team play against Unity College (4-7) on Sunday afternoon at Park Family Field on the UMPI campus.
After several minutes of play in the first half with possession mainly in the midfield area, the Owls Hannah Nadeau (Fr. Saint David, ME) broke loose making a couple of outstanding dribble moves and drilled the first goal of the game into the left corner of the net to put UMPI up 1 to 0 at the 17:38 mark. Nadeau continued to apply pressure on the Unity defense and barely missed on two other scoring chances before sending a pass to teammate Kelsey Robinson (Fr. Atkinson, ME) who booted home a left-footed shot from 18 yards out for a 2 to 0 lead for the Home team.
At the 34:02 mark of the opening half, Ram's freshman Stephanie Strauss got free and scored on a wide open shot to close the gap to 2 to 1 at the half.
The Owls would continue to be on the offensive throughout the second half but could not tack on an insurance goal until just 43 seconds remained in the game when Nadeau would strike again to seal the victory. Unity College had a few chances of their own on corner kicks late in the second half but were stripped of a golden opportunity when UMPI Keeper Alexis Levesque (Jr. Grand Isle, ME) made a diving save on a penalty kick with 12:47 left in the contest.
Goalie Casey Lovely made 4 saves on 5 Unity shots tending net in the first half for UMPI. Teammate Alexis Levesque stopped both shots aimed her way in the second half including the potential tying score on a penalty kick. Ram's keeper Sarah Cantwell made 7 saves on 10 Owls attemps. The Owls out shot Unity for the game 20 to 10 while the Rams had the upper hand on corner kicks 7 to 3.
Next up: UMaine-Presque Isle will travel to Maine Maritime Academy for a 1:00PM match on Saturday October 13th.
