PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Women's Soccer team (1-0) hosted the University of Maine at Machias Clippers (1-2) in their season opener on Sunday afternoon. The Owls would get two first half scores and control possession throughout to win the game 2-0.
The Owls put pressure on the Clipper defense early and often and it paid off with a goal in the 12th minute. Jordi Legassie (JR, Presque Isle, ME) would drive home a goal off of a pass from Janae Libby (SR, Fort Fairfield, ME).
UMPI would add to their lead later in the half. A corner kick travelled into the box and it looked as though the Machias keeper was going to be able to reel it in. The ball slipped through her outstretched hands and Jessi Dickison (SR, Houlton, ME) was there to knock it into the net, putting the Owls up by two scores.
The Clippers would only get one shot, a hard, line drive that was saved by Allie Lopez (SR, Kingfield, ME). UMPI would record 15 shots, eight of them on goal. The Owls would also be awarded ten corner kicks to Machias' one on the afternoon.
"As first games go, getting a positive result is always a good thing," said Head Coach Trevor Parent. "The team as a comprehensive unit did their job, on to our next match against Fisher."
The Owls will host Fisher College (2-0) on Sunday, September 17th. That game will start at noon.
