PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls (3-5-1) won their second in a row on Tuesday night, and exciting 1-0 match as they played host to The University of Maine at Machias (5-4) on Senior Night.
The two teams went back and forth on Tuesday night, in a game that ended up being a physical, well-played match. Machias would outshoot the Owls in the first half 9-6, but neither team would find the net and it would be a scoreless tie going into intermission. The second half started out in much the same manner as the two teams were evenly matched and neither one could scratch a goal. It wasn't until the 53rd minute when Janae Libby (JR, Fort Fairfield, ME) would make a beautiful crossing pass to find Carla Halvorson (SR, Easton, ME) who would drive the ball past the keeper and put the Owls in the lead. The defense would hold after that, despite some opportunities by the Clippers. Allie Lopez (JR, Kingfield, ME) would collect nine saves on the evening, earning the shutout as the Owls would win 1-0.
Prior to the game the UMPI Women's Soccer Team honored four seniors for their contributions to the program. Autumn Poulin, Morgan Roy, Sam Nadeau, and Carla Halvorson were honored in a pregame ceremony.
The Owls will take to the road this weekend as they will return the game and visit Maine-Machias on Saturday. That game will start at 2 PM.
