Owls Fall Short on the Road

WATERVILLE, ME – The Owls went on the road and dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Thomas Terriers on Friday night.

The Terriers put pressure on UMPI from the start.  In the first eleven minutes the Thomas recorded five shots, four of them on goal.  The next one finally found the net as Cassie Contigiani (FR, Belmont, NH) scored off of an assist from Bronte Howorth (SR, Austin, TX) just 13:47 in to the game.  The Owls offense would only get marginally better, as they would only get six shots in the first half, compared to the Terriers' fifteen.  In the 41st minute, Bethany Heald (JR, Enfield, ME) scored her first goal of the season, coming from an assist by Mikaelah Tracy (JR, Houlton, ME).  Despite the offensive advantage for the home team, the score would be tied at the half.  The second half would be more of the same, as Thomas peppered shots on the UMPI goal.  Allie Lopez (SO, Kingfield, ME) would record 16 saves, as she continued to fend off shot after shot.  Sixteen would not be enough as Contigiani found a way to get one more ball by Lopez, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute.  That would prove to be the difference in the game as the Owls only got one more shot on goal the rest of the game, and Thomas would control the action to hold off the visitors and get their second win of the season.  Thomas improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Owls drop to 1-2.

The Owls return to action on Sunday when they host Unity College.  Those two teams faced each other to open the season and UMPI came away with a 2-1 victory.  Game time is scheduled for noon.
