OWLS HOLD MARINERS SCORELESS FOR 87 MINUTES, CANNOT HOLD ON

WATERVILLE, ME – Maine Maritime Academy secured a 1-0 victory over University of Maine-Presque Isle on Friday evening in the opening day of the Terrier Women's Soccer Classic hosted by Thomas College. Morgan Libby found a corner kick cross from Briana Obshatkin and headed the ball in the back of the net in the 87th minute for the game-winner.

The opening half saw both teams go back and forth, with the majority of the play in the middle of the pitch. The Mariners nearly took the lead at the 26th minute when Morgan Libby took a header just wide of the goal off a corner kick.

In the closing stanza Maine Maritime continued to pour on the offensive pressure with 18 shots in the half, but could not capitalize on their opportunities. At 64:09 the Mariners had an opportunity to take the lead on a penalty kick by Victoria Cooper, but the shot sailed just high and hit the cross bar.

The Mariners were able to finally find the back of the twine when Obshatkin placed a corner kick just inside the near post, while Libby jumped over the crowd inside the box and headed the sphere in the net for the eventual game-winning goal.

Presque Isle keeper Allison Lopez was tremendous in the losing effort, stopping 11 shots from an aggressive Mariner attack that outshot the Owls 27-7 and turned up the pressure in the second half hammering the Owl net minder with 18 total shots in the final 40 minutes of action.  The MMA women held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game.

The Owls (1-2) will be back in action tomorrow, as UMPI takes on the host Thomas College Terriers at 12:30 in the final day of the Classic.
