Green Mountain Turns Away Owls

Green Mountain College (4-4) got two goals each from junior forward Katrina Ellis-Ferrara and freshman forward Lauren Nesshoever as the Eagles flew past the University of Maine at Presque Isle 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Eagle Game Field.

Ellis-Ferrara opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play when she tapped in a crossing pass from Nesshoever who had sprinted down the left side and maneuvered around a defender to send the pass.

Nesshoever would get her own goal four minutes later when she ran onto a nice lob pass from sophomore teammate Maegan Laymon and chipped a 12 yard shot over the outstretched arms of UMPI sophomore keeper Amanda Larrabee (Jackson, ME.).

The Owls responded at the 21:28 mark when sophomore midfielder Chelsea Nickerson (Presque Isle, ME.) put home a loose ball in the crease after the ball was misplayed by Eagles' sophomore keeper Amber Heath.

UMPI nearly evened the score at two midway through the second half when a Nickerson direct kick attempt sailed just right of the near post from about 22 yards out.

That seemed to awaken the Eagles' offense as Ellis-Ferrara and Nesshoever teamed up for another score.  This time it was Ellis-Ferrara who lobbed a ball into space for Nesshoever who sprinted onto the ball, made one move to evade the goalie and put home a shot in the 74th minute of play.

Ellis-Ferrara then followed a ball which was lobbed into the six-yard box by sophomore defender Sara Tucker.  The Owls' goalie was unable to secure the ball on her first attempt and Ellis-Ferrara took advantage by pounding home the rebound to close out the scoring on the afternoon. Ellis-Ferrara's two-goal performance gave her goal number six and seven on the season and helped her keep pace with her teammate Nesshoever.

The Owls are now 2-4-1 on the season.  UMPI will next play on the road at Me.-Farmington tomorrow at 4 pm.
