Presque Isle, Maine - The UMPI campus may not remind most of Hollywood, but the first day of the 2013 season rolled along like a sappy feel-good movie. Beautiful weather, plenty of anticipation and excitement for a youthful Owl squad, a tremendously positive UMPI head coach barking encouragement and a great match between two well coached soccer programs…the script was all set for a great day…and the ladies of the Blue and Gold did not disappoint.
The tone for the UMPI ladies was set early, as freshmen midfielder Bethany Heald (Enfield, ME) dashed through the Unity defense to register her first career collegiate goal at 8:34.
Nicole Cyr (Madawaska, ME), returning from a 2012 season ending knee injury, made sure to let everyone know she is back and ready to help lead the young Owl ladies to new heights in 2013, hammered home a goal (21:08) that was assisted by UMPI's lone senior Jen Ouellette (VanBuren, ME).
For the match, UMPI's defensive effort was strong, as Owl keeper Amanda Larrabee (Jackson, ME) was tested by only 6 quality shots for the 90 minutes of play.
