(PRESQUE ISLE, ME) -- The University of Maine-Presque Isle women's soccer team jumped out to a 2-0 lead over UMaine-Machias and then hung on to notch a 3-2 win over their rivals to the south on Wednesday afternoon.
The USCAA #12-ranked Clippers fall to 9-5 while the Owls improve to 5-9.
Owls' leading point scorer Lainey Herring (Sr./Houlton, ME) was impressive offensively again, scoring two goals including the game-winner at 84:33 with help from a Lynds-Beaulieu set-up.
The win for Presque Isle avenges a 7-1 loss at the hands of UMM earlier this season on September 19th. It also snapped a modest 3-game losing streak for the program.
Owls' goalkeeper Taylor Ussery (Sr./La Verne, CA), recently returned from a long lay off due to injury, faced 14 shots on goal and recorded 12 saves in the win.
The match, originally scheduled to be played at Machias, had to be moved to Presque Isle after early week rains washed out the Clippers' field.
UMPI will return to the pitch for their final match of the season this Saturday, October 20th, to face USCAA #1 University of Maine-Fort Kent. That home contest is set to begin at 3pm. It will be Senior Day at Park Family Field. In a brief ceremony prior to the start, the Owls will honor six student-athletes that will put on the UMPI uniform for the last time this weekend: Herring, Ussery, Beauchemin, Kellie Peers (Caswell, ME), Kallie Pelletier (Madawaska, ME), and Elizabeth Keagan (Amherst, Nova Scotia).
Pelletier, Beauchemin, and Keagan all have eligibility remaining however each will be graduating in spring 2013.
