Mariners Make 1st Half Goal Stand
CASTINE, Maine – Sarah Brochu's (Hardwick, Vt.) fifth goal of the season was all of the offense as Maine Maritime defeated Maine-Presque Isle 1-0 in women's soccer Sunday afternoon. The Mariners improved to 4-7-1 on the season, while the Owls slid to 4-7.
Andi Flannery (E. Machias, Maine) delivered a through ball from midfield leading to a Brochu breakaway late in the 14th minute. Brochu went inside the low left post for her first collegiate game-winning goal. Mariners keeper, Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, R.I.) made sure it held up, turning away six saves in the win. The shutout was the second of the sophomore's career.
The Owls' Amanda Larrabee (Fr./Jackson, Maine) denied five of Maine Maritime's 17 shots, including a handful of stops on breakaway situations. Taylor Ussery (Sr./La Varne, Calif) worked 21:50 scoreless minutes with two saves to her credit. It was the senior's first action since being injured against UMaine-Fort Kent back on September 8th.
Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday when the Mariners host Green Mountain in North Atlantic Conference play. UMPI travels to Thomas College next Saturday.
