Bengals Retain Potato Barrel

(FORT KENT, ME) --  Freshmen forward Katherine Ferland (Montreal) scored four goals and assisted on another in leading the University of Maine-Fort Kent past visiting University of Maine-Presque Isle 9-1 in the sixth annual Potato Barrel Classic from Fort Kent, Maine Saturday afternoon.

The Bengals are now 5-1 since the inception of the Potato Barrel trophy.  Entering the game, both teams were ranked in the top 5 of the first USCAA Coaches' Poll of 2012.  UMFK, coming off a 2011 season that saw them win the USCAA championship, opened #1.  The Owls, who just missed out on last year's 8-team tournament field, came in at #3.

Freshmen forward Kayla Richards (Presque Isle, Maine) added a goal and three assists for UMFK (3-0-0) while Kimika Forbes (Trinidad) and Liz Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine) combined to make three saves in goal for UMFK.

Lainey Herring (Sr./Houlton, ME) scored for UMPI (1-2-0) on an assist from Chelsea Beauchemin (So./North Adams, MA).  Herring has at least one goal in all three UMPI contests.

Taylor Ussery (Sr./La Verne, CA) made ten saves on nineteen UMFK shots in goal for the Owls.

The Owls had their match vs. UMaine-Augusta scheduled for Sunday postponed until later in the season.  They will now have a few days off before travelling to UMaine-Farmington Thursday, September 13th to take on the Beavers at 3:30pm.
