(FREDRICTON, NB) -- With the score knotted 1-1 with less than 8 minutes remaining, St. Thomas University took advantage of an "own goal" off a corner kick to notch a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls.
Lainey Herring (Sr./Houlton, ME) registered the lone goal for the Owls (1-1) at the 22:45 mark in the contest. It was already her fourth goal of the season.
Taylor Ussery (Sr./La Verne, CA) was the hard luck loser in goal for the Owls. Ussery kept UMPI in the game with some clutch 2nd half saves. For the evening, she would finish with 11 saves.
"The result obviously isn't what we were working for," said Ussery, "but we will refocus and are looking forward to Saturday."
Thursday night's contest in Canada was the first in a "3 in 4 days" stretch for coach Trevor Parent's Owls. On Saturday, UMPI will travel north to play rival UMaine-Fort Kent in a battle at high noon. Then the Owls will have a quick weekend turnaround as they return home Sunday to play in their home opener against UMaine-Augusta. That match is set to begin at 2:30pm.
