Presque Isle, ME, 9/24/11 – University of Maine-Presque Isle Goalkeeper Taylor Ussery (Jr./La Verne, CA) did everything she could to keep her team close in the first half of Saturday's 6-1 loss against USCAA #1 UMaine-Fort Kent. Ussery survived three straight shots on goal in rapid fire, a penalty kick, and an apparent goal that was then negated by an offside call to keep the game scoreless for much of the first half.
But the Bengals (7-0-1) finally broke through in the 32nd minute with a goal by Donike Ferriera. A second Fort Kent goal by Whitney Sinclair before half, put the game out of reach for the Owls (3-4) who were celebrating Homecoming this weekend. Ferriera (4) and Sinclair (1) went on to put up five more goals in the second half and the route was on. The Bengals led 6-0 before Carolynn Tuck (Sr./Brewer, ME) broke through for the Owls with a goal at 79:39.
The win allowed Fort Kent to retain the 'Potato Barrel", awarded annually to the winner of the match between the two schools.
UMFK outshot UMPI, 39-6. Ussery finished the game with 10 saves.
UMPI will play next weekend on Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st when they have back-to-back contests at SUNY-Canton. Game times are set for 5pm and 1pm respectively.
