Castine, ME – The Owls headed down to Maine Maritime Academy to face off against an East Division North Atlantic Conference opponent. The Owls lost in the first of the two back-to-back games on the weekend, 82-49.
The Mariners of Maine Maritime came out of the gate string with a 21-point first quarter while holding the Owls to on 9 points with their defensive pressure. The Owls continued to struggle in the remainder of the first half as the Mariners led 47-21. UMPI picked up their intensity in the second half on the defensive end slowing down the Mariners to 35 second half points, although they were unable to match it on the offensive end as they scored 28 points in the final 20 minutes.
Paige Espling (Caribou, ME) led the Owls in scoring with 15 points on an impressive 7-11 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds and recording two blocks. Emily Wheaton (Presque Isle, ME) finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Owls will look to bounce back in their second match up vs the Mariners on the weekend.
